December Focus: The Power of Emotion Emotions are the body’s response to stimulation. Feelings are our interpretation based on our experiences, beliefs, and even genetics. Awareness of the space in-between holds the power of influence.
My “operating system” of life experiences and genetics are the filters that interpret emotion, and the resulting feelings sometimes seems out of alignment with who I consider myself to be.
Noticing this misalignment creates an opportunity to influence that operating system.
Feelings aren’t WRONG, they are simply coded by a default operating system that I have the power to influence and adjust (hooray for neuroplasticity!).
Noticing patterns and interrupting them before they fully play out.
Creating sensory input (hello movement and breathwork) to offer the body a reset and slow automatic reactions, interrupting the feedback loop of feelings.
Personal examples -
When I feel anger rising when my kids' laughter is overstimulating - I can pause, breathe, and examine the filter that creates that discomfort.
When I feel anxious because I’m “behind” and haven’t met my own expectations - I can journal and find the filter that creates unrealistic expectations.
When I feel sad because I wasn’t chosen by a potential client - I can let go of the shame spiral of not being good enough and reflect on the value I add to others in my life.
Am I doing this every time feelings arise? No. Do I embrace every opportunity for this POWER? Also no.
And I realize the potential POWER of these moments to allow me to take ownership of this ONE life I have. The grace I give myself as I practice developing this POWER is the bridge to enhance the depth of JOY and CONFIDENCE in my life.
I believe deeply in the power of coaching and personal development that results from the curiosity of coaching conversations. When I first entered this coaching world, I believed it to be the solution to all my feelings problems. The potential power was just a few steps away. I just needed to logic it down to the belief causing the problem and then change it. Simple fix, right?
Yeah - not exactly.
Working with a coach can offer new realizations and support growth and development in many parts of life. Accessing this potentialpower between emotions and feelings may be a simple mindset shift that allows you to influence your default operating system.
Or you may do the coaching and personal development work and identify obstacles that need deeper attention. With certain obstacles, there is no substitute for conversations with a licensed therapist. Emotions are a complex “body, biography, behavior, and context” event. It is not a weakness to recognize your own limitations and seek help.
Sharing the problem solving does not diminish your power. Your potential power lies in your own emotional awareness.
The first key is to notice how you feel and where it lies in your body. Accept the feeling without judgement. Then reflect on the context of that feeling. Identify the root within the default operating system. Determine if you want to influence the system. Own the power to choose your next step.
